North Wilkesboro Speedway re-opens its doors to the racing community for the first time since 1996 following nuanced renovations that serve to bolster the guest experience while retaining the nostalgic historical elements that make the track unique. For decades, community members and their families gathered to enjoy NASCAR at its finest, and through close partnerships with Speedway Motorsports, Inc. (SMI), NASCAR, Wilkes County, and DLR Group, the Choate project team delivers this restored track just ahead of the 2023 NASCAR All-Star Race.

Extensive Renovation, Purposeful Preservation

As part of the reconstruction efforts, the project team repaired and replaced both the exterior and interior concrete walls surrounding the track, in addition to building a new wheel fence. For guests who visited the track growing up, the design of these walls and all reconstruction efforts were tailored to reflect the original structures and provide a sense of familiarity throughout the entertainment venue.

Long-time race enthusiasts will be pleased to find this renovation project also preserved the track material that many of the greats like Junior Johnson, Richard Petty (The King), Dale Earnhardt, Jeff Gordon, and more have raced on throughout the Speedway’s history. The project team was purposeful in maintaining as much of the track’s history as possible, working closely with trade partners to preserve several of the original murals decorating the facility.

One particularly significant structure on the property, Turn Building 4, was rebuilt to embrace the history of the property. Several other structures received similar treatment, including the infield garage canopy, Goodyear building, Hoosier tire building, media center, victory circle, drivers lounge, ticket building, and many more. As all of these structures were structurally intact, the project team performed thorough upfits to the roofing, paint, floors, doors, and hardware.

Enhanced Guest Experience

The project team also repaired the existing grandstands to provide ultimate comfort and convenience for guests. To modernize the facility’s offering, existing seating on the front stretch was removed and track lighting with new control systems under the grandstand structure was constructed.

Additionally, the team refurbished the amenity buildings (concession and souvenir stands, bathrooms, suites, and storage structures) to provide structural stability and refreshed aesthetics for guests to enjoy. Specifically, the renovations for these buildings included updated roofing, modern plumbing fixtures, new water and sewer lines from the local municipality, fresh paint, interior upfits, and new signage throughout the facility.

Strengthening Partnerships Across the Motorsports Industry

North Wilkesboro Speedway is one of many projects Choate is partnering with SMI, DLR Group, and several other talented industry partners to revitalize for the local community. Choate’s relationship with SMI is one that spans decades and continues to grow stronger with each project opportunity.

In addition to this Speedway and several other motorsports projects, Choate works to deliver NASCAR’s new studio/broadcasting facility in Charlotte, wherein the company produces and showcases the latest and greatest in racing content.
