Amber Grace Community Opens Its Doors in Rome, GA

A vision years in the making is officially home.

Amber Grace Community opened its doors in Rome, Georgia, welcoming its first Neighbors to a purpose-built residential community created for adults with mild intellectual and developmental disabilities. The milestone marks the culmination of a deeply personal vision for founders David and Debbie Turner and a significant new resource for individuals and families seeking supported independence, meaningful connection, and a place to belong.

Located on approximately 35 acres of Berry College property, Amber Grace was inspired by the Turners' daughter, Amber, who has Down syndrome. Their experience looking toward her future helped shape a community where adults with IDD can pursue greater independence while remaining connected to the people and support systems around them.

Choate partnered with Amber Grace Community and Cooper Carry to construct the 101,000-SF campus, which includes 16 structures centered around a walkable village environment. Eight residential Houses can ultimately accommodate 48 Neighbors, with individual apartment homes complemented by shared living areas and Support Families who become part of daily life within each House. A community center, gym, pool, village green, pedestrian paths, and additional gathering and learning spaces extend that sense of community beyond the home.

The community's approach extends well beyond housing. Through its NeighborLife programming, Neighbors participate in enrichment courses, life-skills development, community integration, and other opportunities centered on their individual interests and goals. Each Neighbor also works with a mentor as they continue developing greater independence and pursuing opportunities to work, volunteer, serve, and engage in the greater Rome community.

More than 50 trade partners helped bring the community to life, with the future experience of its Neighbors informing decisions throughout construction. That collaboration helped turn an ambitious and highly specialized concept into a place designed not simply to support daily life, but to create opportunities for purpose, relationships, and belonging.

Amber Grace welcomed its first Neighbors on May 5, 2026. For Choate, seeing them now call the community home makes the completion of this project especially meaningful.
