Sugar Creek Charter School (SCCS) expands its presence in the Charlotte area with an interior renovation and external addition to its existing campus. Together with Choate’s repeat client, Movement Foundation, SCCS provides a safe place for students to receive a good education in order to positively impact the lives of children in its community. This partnership enables SCCS to achieve its mission: “to eradicate generational poverty in the lives of its students by providing a rigorous education from kindergarten through 12^th grade with academic preparation, college and career readiness, and life skills for success.”

Building History & Good Bones

Built in the late 1990s, Sugar Creek is the oldest operating charter school in Mecklenberg County. Due to its age, there were no structural drawings available for the existing building. Together with the structural engineer, the on-site superintendent field-measured the existing facility and crafted a plan to add steel to support the building’s new kitchen equipment. Additionally, the sanitary sewer system needed to be completely redesigned to facilitate the cafeteria’s operations.

Due to thorough, early planning and close collaboration between the project team and trade partners, these obstacles had no impact on the project schedule and both the building addition and interior renovation were delivered on time.
