The Space
Square Footage 90,000
Location Charlotte, NC
After serving the community of Charlotte for more than 50 years, SouthPark Church relaunches its mission with a contemporary facility inspired by its traditional roots. Anchoring a mixed-use development, SouthPark Church demolishes its original sanctuary and constructs a 90,000-SF church in its place. This revamped modern campus creates a place where people can live, work, shop, eat, enjoy the arts, and worship all in one place. The four-story church, consisting of a steel-framed and concrete structure, is wrapped with brick, Arriscraft stone and complemented by aluminum composite panels and a storefront glass system. Structural components are also in place for a performing arts venue with balcony.

Blending Two Worship Styles Under One Roof

To offer attendees a variety of services, the interior of the Church features both traditional and contemporary worship spaces, as well a chapel and administrative areas. The traditional worship space required a custom pipe organ assembly with a loft designed to house the components. State-of-the-art AV, theatrical lighting, and high-end speakers are installed throughout both worship areas. Interior finishes include attractive, polished concrete floors, traditional wood accents, and acoustical fabric panels for sound absorption. Engaging classrooms with a mobile check-in desk and roll-up door inspire the Church’s youth.

A Siphonic roof drainage system is installed, incorporating small, flat runs of piping to provide more overhead clearance for the nine different roof elevations and configurations. A custom 180-foot steel mesh cross and ribbon feature accentuate the exterior. Additionally, an LED screen is installed to the exterior of the building to highlight community events and provide opportunities for local businesses to showcase their products and services. Several rooftop patio areas with custom patterned, laser-cut aluminum railings serve as gathering and outdoor learning spaces. Ground-level retail stores attract parishioners and guests.

A Tight Site Requires a Detailed Logistics Plan

With the property surrounded on all sides by a fellow general contractor’s mixed-use jobsite, virtually no laydown area was left for deliveries. Logistics were carefully coordinated, including the efficient use of our mobile crane in conjunction to the nearby contractor’s two tower cranes. Most impressively, 95% of the structural construction was performed within the building footprint.
