A former textile mill built in the 1940s, The Thread is a place the Choate team has grown quite familiar with in recent years. The development includes a first floor dedicated to retail, and added courtyard, entertainment venues, and commercial space.
Preservation has been a consistent thread throughout Choate’s work on The Thread and other adaptive reuse projects within. When the team completed the building’s original shell, they removed the façade and left much of the mill’s natural brick exposed.
That same commitment carried into the Riverstone Logistics headquarters. A brick wall remains exposed at the center of the space, and the team restored the old overhead coiling doors to full operation, adding historic character throughout.
Every detail was considered. The team polished and preserved most of the original flooring, adding carpet only where necessary. The new monumental stairs were built around the old freight elevator shaft, and the original elevator controls, signage, and chains, remain on display in the finished space.
