The Space
Square Footage 189,000
Location Charlotte, NC
A long-standing dream of University of North Carolina Charlotte’s leaders is at last realized with the Marriott Hotel and Conference Center. Owned by the UNC Charlotte Foundation, a nonprofit organization that supports the University, the five-acre site is strategically located by a Light Rail station so conference attendees and hotel guests can easily access City Center.

The seven-story Marriott Hotel offers 226 hotel guest rooms on the gorgeous property. Amenities are endless and give guests the option to relax at the outdoor pool, enjoy food and drinks on one of the many terraces, or work out at the fitness center. A custom curtainwall glass system and architectural metal wall panels define the exterior, while “49er brick” veneer blends the hotel seamlessly into the campus.

The adjoining conference center is a two-story steel structure consisting of the same exterior façade elements as the hotel tower.

Opportunity & Inclusion: Building Success for All

This project is a joint venture between Choate and the SBA 8(a) and HUBZone-certified firm, McFarland Construction.

In conjunction with the City of Charlotte, the team established a Minority, Women, and Small Business Enterprises (MWSBE) goal of 10% for the project. Choate was able to hit 19% by breaking down of scopes of work to allow smaller MWSBE firms to participate in the project and secure the job.

Testimonial

Our firm worked on this project for several years prior to hiring Choate as the general contractor. In alignment with UNCC’s initiative to invest in diverse business, Choate introduced a strategic partner on the project.

From the initial kickoff, the integration of the two firms has been seamless and has shown to be a high-performing team ranging from schedule, to cost management, and high levels of quality. I must tell you that we cannot be more pleased with the collaboration of the team and the product that is being delivered.
