Currently serving as the largest single-terminal container facility in North America and third-largest port in the United States, The Georgia Ports Authority adds an 11,000-SF Rail Operations Building to its crown jewel, the Garden City Terminal. This building provides office space and high-tech operations center for the Mason Mega Rail, an 18-track facility that serves inland markets from Atlanta, Georgia to Memphis, Tennessee.

Fast Action and Creative Solutions

Weeks prior to the commencement of this corporate construction project, Choate’s team took early action to secure long lead-time materials like steel, a critical structural component of the Rail Operations Building. Their proactive plan to tackle the industry’s current supply chain environment prevented potential delays in construction and maintained the project schedule. Additionally, the project team deployed interim solutions to meet permit requirements, such as installing a temporary generator and automatic transfer switch while waiting for the delivery of the permanent equipment.

Despite material shortages and long lead times for critical equipment being key considerations for the project team, this nine-month, fast-tracked project was delivered on time and on budget, demonstrating the team’s commitment to operational excellence and ingenuity during difficult industry circumstances.

Supporting GPA’s Rapid Growth and Expansion

The Rail Operations Building is perfectly located to provide quick, secured access to the Mason Mega Rail while supporting the operations staff with a well-equipped “command center” to oversee logistics and cargo movement.

The first floor offers a breakroom, cafeteria, and locker rooms for yard jockeys, who transport containers within the port. The second floor features offices, conference rooms, and an operations center. To maintain consistent operations, the critical data room in the facility is supported by an uninterruptible power supply (UPS), and the entire building is backed by a generator with infrastructure for a secondary portable generator.
