Clemson’s John Kelly Honors Choate at Energy Systems Research and Testing Facility Dedication

December 12, 2013

Culminating five years of grant writing, planning, development and construction, Clemson University recently dedicated the world’s largest wind turbine drivetrain testing facility and grid simulator at the Charleston Naval Complex in N. Charleston, S.C. Christened as the SCE&G Energy Innovation Center, the 82,000 square-foot facility is the product of the largest single grant awarded by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) for wind power.

Among the 1,000-plus attendees at the dedication ceremony were U.S. Deputy Secretary of Energy, Daniel Poneman; multiple local and state elected officials; and presidents of South Carolina’s two largest energy firms, SCE&G and Duke Energy.

In his opening address, John Kelly, Clemson’s Vice President of Economic Development, recognized Choate for its leadership, dedicated approach to partnering, and impeccable safety record.
