Atlanta, GA (December 31, 2012) – Northridge Plaza, Choate Construction Company’s Atlanta office building, has earned the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) ENERGY STAR certification, which signifies that the building performs in the top 25 percent of similar facilities nationwide for energy efficiency and meets strict energy efficiency performance levels set by the EPA.

“Choate strives for energy efficiency and environmental awareness on every project we construct and we are pleased to accept the ENERGY STAR for our own building,” said Michael Swick, Director of Sustainability. “Increasing energy efficiency is an effective method to cutting energy expenses, which adds additional value to the facility. With so many new green products and techniques on the market, we have a tremendous opportunity to implement them in our own building and thereby provide valuable experience to our clients.”

To earn the ENERGY STAR, Choate implemented the following features:
• Solar photovoltaic system
• LED lighting in interior office space
• Water efficient upgrades to all plumbing fixtures, saving about 1,000 gallons a day
• Solar-reflective energy-efficient window film
• Retro-commissioned mechanical systems to ensure efficient operation
• High-tech irrigation system, reducing water usage by 50%
• Remote-controlled power strips to eliminate ghost power
• “Green cleaning” program to improve indoor air quality
• Reflective white roof system, thus reducing heat island effect

EPA's ENERGY STAR program provides tools which help organizations evaluate and reduce their building's energy usage and carbon footprint. To obtain a certificate, a number of structural and energy output goals must be met and verified by a licensed engineer. Only buildings with a rating of 75 points or above (out of 100), are eligible for certification.
