Choate Construction Company will host its second CANstruction® Competition September 25-30 at Telfair Museums, championing a goal to raise 10,000 cans. This year’s competition participants include Ardd + Winter, Cogdell & Mendrala Architects, Court Atkins Group, LS3P Associates, and Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) AIAS Chapter. At the end of the competition, all cans will be donated to America’s Second Harvest of Coastal Georgia in Savannah.
“In 2021, Choate and competition participants raised 8,700 cans in our very first CANstruction®, benefitting both Second Harvest in Savannah and Second Helpings on Hilton Head Island,” said Kirk Gilbert, Vice President and Division Manager for Choate. “Using the momentum of this past success, we hope to set a new record by raising 10,000 cans! We can’t wait to see what the teams’ have designed, and we look forward to sharing these incredible structures with our community members for a full week at Telfair Museums.”
In a CANstruction® Competition, teams design and build a structure entirely out of canned food with the potential to win in these categories: Most Cans, Best Meal, Structural Ingenuity, Best Use of Labels, Best Original Design, People’s Choice Award, and Best Overall. Between Monday, September 25 and Saturday, October 30, museum visitors can vote on their favorite CanArt® structure, which will be displayed in either the Jepson Center for the Arts or Telfair Academy.
Choate will also host an award ceremony on Friday, September 29 at 5 p.m. at the Telfair Academy to celebrate the ingenuity of each team and distribute awards to winning teams. Honored guest Savannah Mayor Van Johnson will speak at the ceremony and participate as a competition judge.
In conjunction with CANstruction®, Telfair Museums will run its fourth annual partnership and food drive through October 31. During this drive, a portion of each membership sale will help purchase canned goods for Second Harvest of Coastal Georgia’s food bank. This promotion applies to new and renewing members at the $175 Adventurer level and below.
