The Space
Square Footage 75,000
Location Durham, NC
Situated on 13 acres, the first floor of this precast and concrete slab project houses six quick service bays, 33 standard service bays, three alignment bays, five drying bays, and six wet detail bays. The first-floor showroom is constructed of structural steel and a curtain wall system, while the service and shop area is erected using concrete and structural steel. The second floor provides a polished, calming space for employees to serve clients separate from the more technical side of the property, while also featuring administrative offices, an employee breakroom, and restrooms. The detached 1200-SF car wash provides an extra sparkle to vehicles while using reclaimed water. To provide ample parking for the dealership’s staff, inventory, and clients, a 945-spot parking lot is constructed, along with new sidewalks, landscaping, and site lighting.

Tackling Material Shortages

Constructing an automotive project of this scale requires extensive pre-planning to ensure materials arrive on time. Working closely with the client and trade partners, the Choate team was able to accurately forecast the lead times on essential materials, including the garage doors needed for the several service and wash bays, and order the supplies needed early in the process.

With several previous projects completed in conjunction with Asbury Automotive, the team called on this strong relationship and opened a channel of communication that kept everyone on the team involved and up to speed on any shifts in scheduling or material alternatives needed.

Exceptional Care and Service on Display

This two-story signature building is the first on the East Coast to house an observation area overlooking the service bays, where clients can watch the ins and outs of the process as their vehicle is being serviced. This transparency is an integral part of the design and layout of this automotive facility, keeping the client involved every step of the way while also providing a glimpse into the extensive work and care performed on each vehicle.

In addition, a 400-SF break room and boutique lounge area is constructed for the service technicians and clients, featuring a coffee bar and ample luxury seating, as well as clothing and vehicle accessories for purchase.
