Home to UGA’s NCAA title-winning gymnastics team and men’s and women’s basketball teams, historic Stegeman Coliseum receives a dramatic renovation and expansion by Choate Construction. Originally constructed in 1961, Stegeman Coliseum is a landmark at UGA and has had very little modification performed in the last 40 years.
The most striking feature of the project completely alters the look of Stegeman’s exterior. Outer walls, created through the use of butt glazed glass panes, are moved to the end of the iconic “hat rim” roof overhang. Structural steel bow trusses allow this entire façade to be made of glass, creating the appearance of a floating glass wall. Not only does this glazed wall create an awe inspiring entrance, it also adds an extra 10,000 SF to the complex.
The renovation also includes modernization of existing concourse areas and ticketing, as well as the addition of concessions and bathrooms. Custom ceilings and floors, new graphics, and video interactivity throughout the concourse provide fans and visitors an interactive, impressive experience as they attend sporting events and functions at Stegeman Coliseum.
