Located in historic downtown Charleston approximately two miles from the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) campus, the abandoned and former Weil’s Sleep Products mattress factory is dramatically transformed into the home of the SCRA/Charleston Innovation Center. The historic former industrial building constructed in 1897 is renovated to include research and laboratory space through a collaborative effort between the South Carolina Research Authority (SCRA), MUSC and the City of Charleston.
Restoration to the façade includes the preservation of original brick and the refurbishment of original windows; the current roof is replaced in its entirety. The interior is fitted with new mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire suppression systems and will include wet lab areas for use by MUSC to attract and form start-up companies for biomedical discoveries. The building also includes administrative space, meeting rooms, and a police substation for use by the City of Charleston.
