Port Wentworth Wastewater Treatment Facility

Serving the City of Port Wenthworth and surrounding areas, this 2.0 MGD reclamation facility is the first Zero Ultimate Oxygen Demand facility in the Southeastern United States.

Construction includes sequencing batch reactors, disc filters, vertical turbine effluent pumps, ultraviolet disinfection equipment, grit removal equipment, mechanical barscreen, submersible pumps, chemical feed equipment and storage tanks as well as an elaborate instrumentation and controls system.

Challenges include the construction also included the directional drilling of an 18-inch effluent line under the marsh of the Savannah River, as well as ensuring zero disruptions occur to the adjacent Savannah National Wildlife Refuge.

Scheduled as a 24-month project, the Choate team completed the work in 16 months.
