Located on Kennesaw State University’s rapidly expanding campus, this LEED Gold certified laboratory science addition contains the chemistry, biotech, and biochemistry teaching labs, as well as faculty offices, administrative spaces, support spaces, and multi-story atrium. The atrium acts as a central common space for the college. A variety of lab equipment is included within the labs on the upper floors. The lowest floor includes the main mechanical, electrical, and telecommunications equipment. The top floor is shell space for future buildout of additional classrooms and labs. Outside learning environments form research plots for the ecology department. Heat recovery units are employed on both general and fume hood exhaust, reducing the need for air reheat. Occupancy sensors regulate laboratory controls, such as lighting and air change rates. Sun shades carefully permit daylight into labs while reducing heat and glare. The atrium utilizes a smoke evacuation system. Extensive shoring and underpinning of the existing building as well as blasting are necessary.
